SUMMARY:Study Day 2023 Webinar: Specifying Sustainable Flooring
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2023 Study Day programme of webinars\,  Junkers will be discussing Sustainable flooring. \nThe aim of the Junckers CPD presentation Specifying Sustainable Flooring is to provide you with a good understanding of how solid hardwood floors compliments sustainable building design. Wood is a carbon neutral material and specifying the correct wooden floor can produce a measurable reduction in global warming. We will provide you with an understanding of why this is so\, and to help you realise the potential of solid wooden floors over the extended life span of the product. \n\nHow a product with a long-life cycle has a positive impact on the environment\nHow wood keeps CO2 out of the atmosphere\nHow to use EPDs and manufacturers’ tools to evaluate different products at the design stage\nHow designing with wood has a positive impact on indoor climate\, wellbeing and daylighting\n\nFacilitating the event will be Mark Appleyard\, Kier Construction and Head of Profession – Construction for SPACES. \nThe webinar will be hosted on webinarjam and you can register here. \n  \nThanks to our sponsors \n                             \nNB The iCal.ics calendar invite does not download correctly on all operating systems. SUMMARY:Winter Technical Meeting 2022 - The Building Safety Act
DESCRIPTION:There will be a joint Technical Meeting with CIBSE HCNE at the Trinity Bell\, London on Wednesday 7th December\, followed by a Christmas Buffet and networking opportunity. \nThe presenter will Hywel Davies\, Technical Manager at CIBSE\, and the presentation will be covering the Building Safety Act. \nDue to limits on numbers and booking catering this event is currently only for SPACES members and CIBSE Home Counties members. Attendance at the meeting and buffet is free but must be booked by TUESDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2022. \nFrom Hywel’s article in the CIBSE Journal ‘Time to act on safety‘. \nThe Building Safety Act\, which became law more than six months ago\, is the most fundamental reform of the regulation of building work in England and Wales since World War II. \nIt establishes the Building Safety Regulator (BSR)\, with a statutory duty to exercise its powers to ‘[secure] the safety of people in or about buildings in relation to risks arising from buildings\, and [improve] the standard of buildings’. \nIt also allows competence requirements to be imposed in relation to ‘any building work’ regulated by the Building Act. \nSee below to book your place.

SUMMARY:SPACES Study Day Webinar: Edinburgh City's continuing journey to Zero Carbon
DESCRIPTION:As part of our ongoing series of webinars related to our Study Day\, Net Zero Carbon – Building Resilience\, Patrick Brown\, Head of Sustainable Construction Delivery\, City of Edinburgh Council will be discussing Edinburgh City’s continuing journey to Zero Carbon. \nPatrick has a wide range of experience\, at various times leading key aspects of building construction and operation including design\, project management\, facilities management\, energy management\, PFI/PPP operational contract management and acted as the Senior Responsible Officer (SRO) for a strategic outsourcing initiative\, which reached preferred bidder stage\, for all the Council’s property related technical functions. \nPatrick currently heads the delivery of the design and project management service for CEC’s (non- housing) Operational Estate. \nFollowing the closure of the Council’s (PFI) PPP1 education estate in 2016\, as a consequence of a structural failure\, he had a lead role in addressing the technical response to reopening the 17 schools impacted. In addition\, he led the development and implementation of the Council’s response to de-risking the wider Operational Estate with regard to these issues identified in the PPP1 estate failure. He also developed and implemented the response to the construction quality recommendations of Professor Cole’s report which the City of Edinburgh Council had commissioned. \nPatrick has a long- standing interest in energy and sustainability with a current focus on addressing construction quality issues\, the emerging energy ‘performance gap’ and Net Zero. This interest resulted in making the case for the adoption of Passivhaus for new build projects which is now the City of Edinburgh Council’s approach across its Operational Estate. \nPatrick has established an informal Passivhaus Delivery Forum currently attended by eight Local Authorities across Scotland who are delivering projects to Certified Passivhaus standard. Some Authorities are now at very advanced stages of Passivhaus project delivery. \nIn response to the Net Zero challenge Patrick led on a pilot study examining the implications of deep fabric retrofit to enable the deployment of heat pumps (this being the current available low/zero carbon primary heating technology for many buildings at this time). In an extension to the above mentioned Passivhaus Delivery Forum collaborative effort\, this feasibility approach is being considered by three other Scottish Local Authorities with a view to pooling the findings. \nFacilitating the session will be Greg Keeling\, Essex County Council\, and Events Director\, SPACES. \nThe webinar will be hosted on webinarjam and you can register here. \nOnce again thank you to our sponsors this year  Atkins\, Bauder Roofing\, Faithful+Gould\, Norse Group\, Pick Everard and Willmott Dixon. \nNB The iCal.ics calendar invite does not download correctly on all operating systems. SUMMARY:SPACES Study Day Webinar - The Construction Playbook
DESCRIPTION:As part of our ongoing series of webinars related to our Study Day\, Net Zero Carbon – Building Resilience\, Richard Davidson\, Willmott Dixon will be presenting on The Construction Playbook: HMG response to improving built environment outcomes through smarter procurement.. \nIn December 2020\, the government published their guidance on how to source and contract public works projects and programmes. Intent on improving outcomes and ensuring best value for the public purse – this document sets out best practice and policy guidance not just for central government but all of those engaged in delivering public services. \nThis session will explore some of the key areas in the guidance\, why these are relevant to all those involved in the built environment and what it means if you don’t adapt your practices to suit. \nIn particular we will explore the concepts of collaboration\, MMC\, value and strengthening financial assessment. \nThis session is appropriate for all those involved in procurement\, project initiation\, project management\, contracting\, design\, supply chain\, contracts\, sustainability\, social value and stakeholder engagement. \nTo quote one of the chief contributors\, ‘it is the new rules of the game…the industry isn’t working as well as it should be and this is the government backed response to delivering best value’. \nRichard Davidson is a Director at Willmott Dixon\, responsible for business development\, early tendering and market engagement. A strategic thinker and believer in constant improvement\, Richard is frequently engaged in local and national initiatives turning his holistic thinking and energy to whichever challenge is presented. \nRichard is also passionate about playing his part to achieve Willmott Dixon’s ambition that by the end of 2030 all of their new buildings and major refurbishments will achieve net zero operational carbon. \nBased in Hertfordshire he is involved with construction and development schemes across East Anglia and London bringing his knowledge and expertise into both the public and private sectors to those looking to pursue a green growth agenda. He is a passionate believer in the power of strong networks and always takes the time to connect people\, believing that collaboration is the most important factor in building successful outcomes. \nOnce again thank you to our sponsors this year  Atkins\, Bauder Roofing\, Faithful+Gould\, Norse Group\, Pick Everard and Willmott Dixon. \nFacilitating the session will be Greg Keeling\, Essex County Council\, and Events Director\, SPACES. \nThe webinar will be hosted on webinarjam and you can register here. \nNB The iCal.ics calendar invite does not download correctly on all operating systems.
