SUMMARY:Webinar: School Design Post Covid
DESCRIPTION:Laura Jones\, LJA Architect + RIBA Client Adviser\, will be presenting and discussing school design post Covid. \nThe last 150 years of school building design in the UK has been chequered…some moments of genius and some of disaster. With the construction industry grappling with what the Covid-19 pandemic means for future school buildings\, this webinar will questions what the direct\, and indirect\, implications of the crisis might be on the way we design school buildings…and whether some historic examples can provide some inspiration. \n  \nThis is a SPACES members only event. Joining instructions will be sent on the Thursday. Please check your inbox.  \nIf you are a member\, please book your ticket below and you will be sent joining instructions the day before. \nIf you are not a member and would like to attend please register for membership first (SPACES membership is free for those in the public sector) on our website before you book your ticket below. \nTo find out more about SPACES membership please see our website. \nNB Bookings close at 10:00am on Friday 18th September\, to allow time to send the joining instructions out.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Innovative approach to closing the energy performance gap\, Dr Roderic Bunn
DESCRIPTION:Dr Roderic Bunn\, developer of the Soft Landings process and associate with environmental engineering consultant WMEBoom\, will present an innovative approach to closing the energy performance gap for new non-domestic buildings. Roderic will explain the principles behind the S-Curve theory of energy wastage: a trajectory that defines the common trend of low-carbon promises made during design leading to high energy-wastage in building operation. \nThe presentation is timely as the S-Curve approach has been incorporated in recent CIBSE technical guidance CIBSE TM61 Operational Performance of Buildings. It will also be adopted by the RIBA for its Plan for Use guidance supporting the 2020 RIBA Plan of Work. \nRoderic will introduce a research project aimed at turning the S-Curve concept into a practical tool for use during procurement and construction. The tool will be designed to calculate and visualise the energy penalties that gradually emerge during procurement without anyone in a project team being aware. The project\, Visualization of Energy Performance in Procurement (VEPP)\, is currently applying for government funding to develop a free-to-use tool aimed particularly at the public sector. A successful bid will require industry oversight of the tool’s development. Interested parties from SPACES membership will be able to apply. \nThe presentation is relevant to all clients interested in reducing energy wastage and carbon dioxide emissions\, and construction practitioners required to meet their professional obligations in tackling the causes of climate change. \nFor information on the S-Curve\, see attached. \nThis event is open to both SPACES and non-SPACES members. Bookings will close at 10:00am on Tuesday 15th September. Joining instructions will be sent that morning (Tuesday 15th September). Please check your inbox.

SUMMARY:Making a Reality of a 2020 Vision for Modular and Offsite Design
DESCRIPTION:This events has been cancelled! \nSPACES members are offered a reduced rate at Making a Reality of a 2020 Vision for Modular and Offsite Design which is being held on Tuesday 17th March in London organised by AL4E UK. \nThe Association for Learning Environments have released their programme of key events for 2020\, which they hope will offer an insight into offsite construction sector for both industry experts and those who are hoping to develop a broader understanding of MMC. \nThese events will play host to speakers whose expertise lies in modern methods of construction\, such as Architects\, Main Contractors and clients. They will provide industry insights based on experience and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of utilising MMC. All speakers will take into consideration the varying requirements of different school projects\, including complexities and budget. The objective of these events is to share findings and understand how they can deliver new school buildings on a much wider scale. \nYou can download a copy of the flyer. \nTicket prices are from £50 (SPACES members) to £220 and can be booked here. \n

SUMMARY:Winter Technical Meeting
DESCRIPTION:There will be an Technical Meeting jointly held with CIBSE HCNE at The Counting House on Tuesday 3rd December 2019\, followed by Christmas Lunch. \nIn the morning there will be a presentation on Potential Changes and updates to the Building Regulations\, specifically Part L by Hywel Davies\, Technical Manager at CIBSE. You can download a draft copy of the agenda. \nHywel’s presentation will look at the current consultation on Government plans for the Future Homes Standard as well as the broader regulatory background to building regulations in response to the Grenfell disaster and climate change concerns. The Future Homes Standard consultation package is the first stage of a two-part consultation about proposed changes to Part L of the Building Regulations. With a legal target to reduce UK greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050\, government has committed to introducing the Future Homes Standard in 2025. This consultation sets out what the Government think a home built to the Future Homes Standard\, with an average 75- 80% reduction in carbon emissions than one built to current energy efficiency requirements. It will also consider what we can learn from this consultation about the likely trajectory for non-domestic buildings. \nAs this is the Christmas meeting\, the meeting will be followed by a two course Christmas Lunch. NB Due to pre-ordering Christmas Lunch is only available to order up to Thursday 21st November. You can see a copy of the menu and choose your options here.  \nAttendance at the meeting is free but if you want to stay for lunch there is a charge (non-refundable). \n\nFree for full SPACES members and CIBSE HCNE members.\n£20 (inc VAT) for individual\, retired\, and honorary SPACES members\, ACES\, SCQS and ACA members\n£30 (inc VAT) for non-members.\n\nIf you would like a third course\, there will be an additional charge of £5 (inc VAT) for all attendees. \nPlease book your ticket below.

SUMMARY:ACA Association of Consultant Architects Conference 'Collaborating to manage risk and delivery'.
DESCRIPTION:Devonport House\, Greenwich\, London \nCollaborative procurement techniques are gaining ground\, and many case studies have shown us how they can create added value. But we also need to look closely at how collaboration can enable a team to manage the risks that so often derail project delivery. \nKing’s College London\, with the ACA and the Alliance Steering Group have put together this one day conference to explore examples of how collaborative risk management and project management sit at the heart of safe and efficient procurement. \nWe are pleased to announce that our keynote speaker will be Dr David Hancock\, Construction Director at the Infrastructure and Projects Authority\, who brings a wealth of hands-on experience from his risk management work on Terminal 5 Heathrow. \nIn addition\, Professor David Mosey of King’s College London will lead a workshop examining lessons from the results of six years’ research into what works\, and what does not\, when collaborative intentions might collide with the harsh reality of potential claims and disputes. \nOur workshops will also explore: \n\nwhat are collaborative risk management and collaborative project management in practice?\nhow can tendering criteria other than lowest price lead to improved value and risk reduction?\nhow can delivery under modern methods of construction be improved by strategic planning and joint risk management?\nhow can digital technology convert risks into opportunities through collaborative procurement?\n\nThis conference will offer essential insights for construction clients\, consultants and contractors working in any sector and we hope to see you there. The conference fee is £150 which includes materials and a buffet lunch\, with an early bird price of £95 for bookings paid for by 31st August. \nYou can make your bookings through the ACA.
