Joint winners of the Heritage Category are SOAS, London and Wessex Learning Centre, Winchester.
SOAS, London
Client – SOAS
Architect, Surveyor & M&E Engineer – Mace Ltd
Contractor – Graham Construction
A very impressive scheme with a lot of thought going to bring this disused listed grade 2 building into full productive use. From the outset SOAS wanted the building to have many sustainable solutions as possible, a target of BREEAM excellent was set and achieved, including energy efficient lighting and equipment also rain water harvesting. The double height hyperbolic paraboloid (double curvature) glass roof over the central courtyard is very impressive and provides an excellent student hub space within the heart of the building.
Wessex Learning Centre, Winchester
Client – The Dean and Chapter of Winchester Cathedral
Architect & M&E Engineer – Property Services Hampshire County Council
Structural Engineer – Mann Williams
Contractor – John Hobden Ltd
A brand-new building which extends learning and participation opportunities for the cathedral. Sympathetically designed and constructed within Cathedral Close, which is a scheduled ancient monument, it is surrounded by Grade 1 listed buildings and the grounds of Winchester Cathedral. Challenges of tight space, where all materials had to fit through a garden wall gate, designed to be ecologically friendly, as well as a number of partners to be consulted, this project is a real success of both ingenuity and determination.
