The joint winners of the Small Refurbishment category were West Calder Library, West Lothian and Wombwell Chapel, Barnsley.
West Calder Library, West Lothian
Client and Architect – West Lothian Council
Surveyor – Currie & Brown
Contractor – Clark Contracts
The overall assessment of this Category B listed Carnegie Library project was of a job well done and to budget. The panel found the building to be welcoming and light with a subtle use of colour with the main features of the job being the flexible use of space in the library area. The extension of the sub-basement giving a significant amount of extra usable space in a small building, made it more financially viable with the inclusion of other council services using the additional accommodation providing an improved service to the community.
Wombwell Chapel – Barnsley
Client – Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council
Architect, Surveyor & M&E Engineer – NPS Barnsley
Contractor – Sanderson Building Services
This project was achieved through the drive and dynamism of the local community group in raising awareness and funds, with the approval, encouragement and professional support of the local council (Barnsley MBC). It was brought to reality by Project Manager Sean Lilley of NPS Barnsley, together with the contractor Sanderson Building Services. The Panel were particularly impressed by the way in which, through innovative and collaborative working, so much had been achieved from such modest funding – remarkable teamwork.
