Study Day 2016 – Walking Tour

The walking Tour of Hampshire Buildings will be held on Tuesday 28th June starting at 2.15 from the Discovery Centre approx 5 mins from Winchester Station. This will be followed by a visit to the Cathedral Visitors Centre, the Great Hall and Westgate School, and will finish between 4:30 and 5:00pm, where if required transport can be provided to the Holiday Inn (please inform the SPACES Manager if this is required).

Discovery Centre
Winchester Discovery Centre is the flagship project for Hampshire County Council’s library rejuvenation scheme. The project restored and extended a Grade II* Corn Exchange to provide a library, gallery, performance hall and café. The design needed to widen the appeal of a library, encouraging members of the community who would not normally visit and enabling a range of cultural activities and performances to suit all tastes. This forward-looking vision needed to be accommodated without diminishing the listed building’s heritage.

Awards include

Winchester Cathedral Visitors Centre
The Leaning Centre at Winchester Cathedral, situated in the Inner Close, is currently located in a Grade I listed eighteenth century house built around the remains of the original Priory kitchen with a long back garden enclosed by walls.
The Centre is intensively used to receive church and school groups and host courses and meetings. The Cathedral recognises the need to expand these facilities just as those for general visitors have been in the recent past.
The brief was to improve the existing unsatisfactory ground floor layout and access to the first floor rooms and provide a multi-purpose seminar room capable of accommodating 120 people and with supporting services including kitchen and toilets.

Awards include
RIBA South Regional Award 2016
Considerate Constructors National Site Award Winner 2016 – Silver

Great Hall
Winchester Great Hall is the first and finest of all 13th century halls, with the greatest symbol of medieval mythology, King Arthur’s Round Table. The Great Hall is designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade 1 listed building.

Westgate School
The Westgate School project takes a redundant boarding house and creatively re-models and extends it to provide a new 420 place primary school. Built on the site of an existing secondary school, it creates a centred learning village for a 4-16 age range, the first ‘all-through school’ campus in Hampshire.
