Study Day 2016 Workshop – Can offsite deliver the flexibility required for good design?

Paul Inch, Innovaré Systems and Marcel Hendricks, Education Construction Network.

Summary

The session will be asking “Can offsite deliver the flexibility required for good design?”

The workshop will provide an interactive session, exploring ways to maximise the flexibility in offsite construction techniques that delivers good quality school design against the backdrop of austerity and the ever increasing need for pupil places.

The aim is to discuss what flexibility and type of service is required by offsite providers to deliver the key requirements for good quality and robust design, including key topics such as:

  • flexible configurations and circulation spaces
  • natural lighting and ventilation
  • thermal comfort and reduced reliance on complex mechanical systems
  • good acoustic performance

Key drivers such as optimised timescales, best value and quality will be reviewed combined with what (if any) compromises should be made.

Innovaré Systems has delivered 15,000 school places over 45 projects in 2015 utilising offsite construction techniques. Ranging from exemplar architectural projects to the cost driven PSBP framework, each project has required the ability to take an architect’s good design and innovate; delivering rapid and compliant buildings without compromise.

Biography

Paul Inch started in construction 25 years ago. From early beginnings in high efficiency wood heating, flues and biomass, he moved to cement particle rain-screen cladding systems and Velux roof windows.

But for the last decade, his passion has been MMC and off-site solutions. It started with Kingspan, where Paul headed up various off-site solutions for Steel and Timber in the residential markets. Now Paul is head of Business Development for Innovaré Systems, leading in both Education and Residential sectors to deliver client value and the benefits of off-site.  Specifically now focusing on Innovare’s unique Hybrid and SIPs based construction solutions for the learning environment.

Paul, as part of a Housing Forum workgroup, published a report looking into customer-driven design innovation in housing in order to address the Government’s “Red Tape Challenge”. He subsequently became involved in the Zero Carbon Hub workgroup, commissioned by government to address concerns on the performance gap between “Design” and “As-built”.

Marcel Hendricks provides over 25 years of education construction consultancy and delivery experience. He has achieved notable success as both a consultant and contractor. A Chartered Building Surveyor Marcel was previously a Director at Sprunt Architects, specializing in urban regeneration and education projects, particularly in the Independent Schools sector.  He joined the Apollo Group in 2006 becoming Divisional Director for Education and was instrumental in growing Apollo Education from £8million to a £50million turnover division and market leader in four years.

He delivered the first BSF School in London, The Michael Tippett School, which won the Best Designed School and Grand Prix at the PfS (Partnership for School) Excellence in BSF Awards in 2008. Further awards followed for the next two schools; Park Campus which won awards for Innovation in Sport & PE and Elm Court School which won Best Design for a Remodelled School in 2009 and is hailed as an exemplar on how to refurbish historic school buildings by English Heritage.

Marcel then went on to bid and deliver two of the first Free Schools in the country – The Ark Conway Primary Academy and The West London Free School.

Upon leaving Apollo in April 2012 he set up Marcel Hendricks & Partners. He now specializes in providing bespoke strategic advice for clients, consultants, contractors and suppliers. Recent projects include the largest off-site modular school being delivered by the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham. He also acts as Technical Advisors for Schools, Colleges and Academies looking to manage and develop their estates. He is currently advising on the masterplan for the College of North West London.

In July 2012 Marcel set up the Education Construction Network (ECN) to provide a forum where information about forthcoming bid and tender opportunities, as well as best practice, can be shared in an open and informal environment. Over 120 organizations have joined the ECN which meets on a monthly basis in central London.
Marcel is an RIBA Client Advisor Assessor and also sits as an assessor for the RICS.
