  • Adrian James, Adrian James Acoustics, has written the attached article regarding acoustic design for SEN Schools.
  • For those SPACES members who are involved in facilities management, the BSI has published BS 8536-1:2015 Briefing for Design and Construction: Code of Practice for Facilities Management (Buildings infrastructure). There is also a BS 8536 Checklist available free of charge from BSI (downloadable pdf).
  • National Construction Week takes place at the NEC on 6 – 11 October; attendance is free and covers 9 construction related shows and a range of seminars. The content is relevant to all construction related professionals.
  • The new CDM regulations 2015 are a hot topic for designers and have been recorded as the most requested CPD from the RIBA. Safer Sphere offers Principal Designer training which is relevant to SPACES members.
  • The BRE Newsletter offers useful updates including BREEAM, blogs, training and low cost webinars relevant to the work of SPACES members. For information on the newsletter etc, please see the BRE Academy Website.
  • A Chinese entrepreneur who took just 19 days to build a 57-storey tower says he has triggered a construction revolution. And his dreams soar far, far higher. See BBC website.
  • The RIBA has now published ‘Ten Principles for Procuring Better Outcomes’ following focus group feedback. The document has been developed to help decision-makers within client organisations get the best possible outcomes when they procure architectural services, further to the Public Contract Regulations 2015 which came into force in March. Please see the digital version on the RIBA website and article in the RIBA Journal. Copies were distributed at the Study Day.
  • The CIBSE Technical Memorandum, TM57: Integrated School Design, was launched on 16th April 2015. Copies of the document can be downloaded from the CIBSE website. Co-editor Dejan Mumovic discusses the document in the Schools and Education Special Supplement of the CIBSE Journal. Other authors include SPACES members Greg Keeling and Richard Daniels.
  • The Presidents of CIBSE, B&ES and RIBA have joined forces to call for more collaboration between members of the construction supply chain.
  • Information, guidance and updates on school building design (ie what was building bulletins and baseline designs) can be found on the government website.
