I’m sad to have to report the untimely death of Bernard Wyld, who many members of SPACES will have known.
After he retired as Chief Architect at West Sussex, Bernard became joint Manager of SCALA, a role which I shared with him. He was a positive thinker and ideas man, seeing opportunities where others saw problems, and was a pleasure to work with.
He organised many successful Conferences and Study Days. He also introduced and edited the regular newsletter which though packed full of useful information for members, became known as the ‘Yellow Peril’ – (there was a rumour that he’d got a cheap job lot of the awful yellow paper that nobody else wanted!).
He then took the initiative and persuaded the SCALA Yearbook publisher Lansdowne to publish the quarterly high quality glossy ‘SCALANews’, at no cost to SCALA. As editor he introduced new features and found distinguished contributors, and raised SCALA’s profile within and beyond the Membership, including arranging distribution to members of the Association of Consulting Architects. These were published from Autumn 2003 to New Year 2015.
The respect in which he was held more widely professionally was marked by his membership of the Architects Registration Board.
Bernard was one of life’s gentlemen, always positive and courteous, and he bore his illness with characteristic dignity.
He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
